What is the rack made of?

  • The metal parts are a mixture of aviation and marine grade aluminum. Just as strong as the parts used in planes, boats, and other sled ski/board racks.
  • The brackets are made of a rubber-ish material, by a newer technology that allows for more creative manufacturing.

What is the surface finish like?

  • The metal parts have a raw aluminum finish. There will be small scratches from manufacturing, assembly and testing, which are barely noticeable, and won't effect the integrity of the rack.
  • The metal can be powder coated.
  • The brackets feel like very firm rubber.
  • The bracket 'look' depends on the color and lighting. None of them have a special finish coating, but the colors described as 'translucent' will have a little more shine in the sunlight.

Will the colors fade and brackets degrade over time?

  • Over several years, the color may fade a little.
  • Bring the rack inside with you after your rides, and leave it inside when not in use - as one should do with all their valuable gear.
  • This will extend the life of your equipment.

What does made in the USA mean?

Which rack should I buy? I'm confused, there's too many models.

  1. Books: Universal Brackets > You might carry boards and skis on any given day, and want the flexibility of the universal bracket. You want to get creative with the color options.
  2. Deserted: Adjustable Brackets > You usually carry boards or skis, and don't mind adjusting the bracket width once in a while. This is best done inside at home before rides. You like the color options, and don't mind saving $30 too.
  3. Deserted Proto > Adjustable width brackets again, i.e. set your desired width ahead of riding. Only recommended for skis/splits. Except the bottom of the bracket-edge interface is protected with pieces of tape, NOT rubber. Still a solid rack, you'll be hard pressed to find something better at this price. You appreciate saving more $$.
  4. Hoodoo Proto > Adjustable width brackets again, i.e. set your desired width ahead of riding. The bracket-edge interface is protected with rubber. It does NOT have a flat surface for carrying gas cans/gear - it still works for that, it's just not flat. You appreciate saving more $$. You'll be hard pressed to find something better at this price.
  5. Tonsina Proto > Most basic, cheapest. Only recommended for skis/splits. Edge-rack interface not protected - you can lay down tape to protect the edges. Flat surface carries gas cans and packs nicely. You'll be hard pressed to find something better at this price.
